Austin, Texas

It’s been a minute since I’ve been to Austin. A lot has changed over the years. I remember WEIRD magazine, Brave New Books, and Bobalu Cigar Company on 6th Street (the best espresso in town use to be found at Babalu). Gone are those days. Elon Musk and Joe Rogan have made the exodus to ATX along with many. Sushi A Go Go is no longer a food truck, but I digress. It took  Mr. Ballen to bring me back for a live story telling at The Paramount Theater. If you find yourself in Austin for a day here are a few recommendations.

Lunch at Sam’s Bar-B-Que

The best ribs I have ever had, and perhaps the best BBQ in Austin. Sam’s has been serving bbq to the community since 1957 and has survived two fires and a gentrification buy out.

Relax with a cigar at The Cigar Vault

Located in a neighborhood off East Cesar Chavez St. this laid back lounge has an outdoor patio with a fire pit, comfortable indoor seating, and a great selection of sticks. It’s BYOB or they have soda, water, and coffee. Blue Owl Brewing is located across the street so you can pick up a 6 pack if needed.

Drinks at Casino El Camino

The bloody marry’s here are legendary. A 6th street staple and one of Austin’s best dive bars. They make a mean burger too. Don’t forget to throw a penny in the fountain and make a wish to the drunken monkey god before you leave.

Check out the Museum of the Weird.

Kill some time in this classic roadside style museum full of strange dark and mysterious items.

A slice from Roppolo’s Pizza

A NYC local who made the move to Austin and has been serving Sicilian style pizza on 6th street for over 25 years. Buy it by the slice or whole pie.

Donuts at VooDoo Donut

Open until 3:00am the Old Dirty Bastard is the best donut ever made, or at least it seems that way after a long night.
